The most common eye problem in winter is dryness. That is, the eyes get dry easily. It may cause burning or itching of the eyes.
One of the causes of dry eyes in winter is dry cold air, low humidity, and cold temperature. Besides, the use of a heating system at home and office at this time can also cause dry eyes. In winter, windows are closed for long periods and heaters are turned on to avoid the cold. As a result, the humidity of the air decreases further.
Watery eyes can also cause problems in winter. This is usually due to dry eyes. According to doctors, long-term dry eye problems can lead to blurred vision or damage to the cornea. If the cornea is damaged, there is a risk of blindness over time.
To avoid dry eyes in winter:
* Drink enough water: Many people tend to drink less water during winter. But drink plenty of water to keep your eyes moist. Aim to drink at least eight glasses (about two liters) of water a day. Also, when you wake up, turn on the humidifier.
* Use eye drops: Lubricating eye drops or artificial tears can be used to relieve dry eyes. It does not require a doctor’s permission to use it, it can be used only if there are signs of dryness in the eyes.
* Blink: Avoid staring at a computer or other screen. If the normality of blinking is disrupted, the eyes dry out quickly. So you have to blink frequently while working on the screen. The advice applies not just to screens, but to anything that can reduce the blink rate.
* Wear sunglasses: The use of sunglasses is not only limited to summer, but it is more important in winter. According to experts, the UV rays of the sun can cause severe damage to the eyes during cold days. People who spend more time in the sun without sunglasses are at increased risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. In addition, the eyelids are also at risk of skin cancer when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Wear sunglasses with UV 400 protection to give your eyes almost 100 percent protection. Wearing sunglasses outside in winter also protects against the drying effects of the wind.
* Include omega 3 in diet: Studies show that eating foods rich in omega 3 can also bring relief to dry eyes. Omega 3 improves meibomian gland activity in the eye, thereby reducing the discomfort of dry eyes. Foods rich in omega 3 also reduce the risk of dry eyes.
* Keep eyes moist: Coconut oil keeps eyes moist, reducing irritation. You can apply coconut oil on clean cotton for 15 minutes. Or dip a piece of clean cloth in lukewarm water, squeeze it and keep it on the eyes for five minutes. Then massage the cloth on the upper and lower eyelids with light finger pressure.
